Description
Named after an early owner, the Roman poet Ausonius, and with records of vines on the current site dating back to 1592, Château Ausone is steeped in history and is rightly regarded not only as one of the finest estates in St. Emilion, but in all Bordeaux. For 11 generations now, since 1690, the Vauthier family has owned and presided over this property. Today it is owned and run by Alain Vauthier alongside his daughter Pauline, a qualified oenologist. A tiny holding of 7 hectares of vines across small terraces on perfect east, south-east exposure are planted to low yielding vines averaging 50 years of age with a production of roughly 1,500 cases per year. The Vauthiers now plant to 12,500 vines per hactare, double some of their neighbours. The vineyard is planted 65% to Merlot and 35% to Cabernet Franc but the grand vin usually has equal amounts of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The wine shows incredible depth, power, tremendous freshness and elegance.
