Description
The 39ha estate is planted 49% Cabernet Franc, 47% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon. 8ha of the Cabernet Franc were planted in 1950s and some even planted in 1920s, some of the oldest vines in Bordeaux. The property was puchased by a consortium led by Bernard Arnault of LVMH back in 1998. This led to a quality renaissance which took 11 years to unfold. Cheval Blanc is now producing wines at the top of its game and contending in many years for wine of the vintage. The new winemaking facilities are some of the most modern and advanced in all of Bordeaux, allowing new levels of precision and attention to detail. The vineyard is divided into over 50 blocks and each of these blocks is vinified in its own tank since the refurbishments in the early 2010s. Of the 5 gravel mounds in the Saint Emiliion appellation 2 run through the Cheval Blanc vineyards. This accounts for the dominance of Cabernet in the vineyard, a-typical to the region.
